President Trump signed an executive order cutting government regulations on small and large businesses. He made briefing remarks before the signing, claiming it the largest cut by far in terms of regulations. The order requires government agencies to revoke two regulations for each new one they issue.

Two days earlier the president suspended entry into the U.S. of all refugees for 120 days; indefinitely halted Syrian refugees from entering the country; and blocked for 90 days entry for residents of the predominantly Muslim countries Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

President Trump participated in a ceremonial swearing-in for Defense Secretary James Mattis. Following the swearing-in, President Trump delivered brief remarks and signed an executive order allowing for new vetting measures of refugees that he said would prevent terrorists from entering the country. This is the Executive Order being called a “travel ban” it is also being called a “Muslim Ban”. He also signed another order to expand and modernize the military, including its nuclear arsenal and special operation forces.

President Trump held a conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May, his first as president. at the White House. The two leaders responded to questions on relations with Russia and Mexico, the U.K.’s exit from the European Union, and President Trump’s position on torture. He said he would defer to Defense Secretary Mattis on the issue of torture, even though he does not agree. Prime Minister May also announced that President Trump accepted an invitation for a state visit to the U.K.

Vice President Pence, White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway, Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA), and Representative Mia Love (R-UT) were among the speakers at the annual March for Life rally in Washington, DC. Vice President Pence was the highest-ranking elected official to ever address the march, which was celebrating its 44th year. The speakers talked about their support for anti-abortion legislation, and promised that lawmakers in the 115th Congress and the Trump administration were opposed to abortion, and to Planned Parenthood, the national organization of health clinics. Afterward, marchers began making their way toward Capitol Hill and the Supreme Court.

British Prime Minister Theresa May spoke at the congressional Republican retreat. She called for renewed relations between the U.S. and U.K. In addition, the prime minister said, The days of Britain and America intervening in sovereign countries in an attempt to remake the world in our own image are over” and urged both countries to stand strong in defending shared values and interests. Other topics included combating ISIS*, Russia, the Iran nuclear deal, trade relations, and the need to reform NATO and the United Nations.

Since 1945 a team of Nobel laureates at the publication has been compiling research and analysis to set their metaphorical clock, the hands of which they move closer to midnight when the group believes the world is moving closer to catastrophic events.
