The two leaders responded to questions on relations with Russia and Mexico, the U.K.’s exit from the European Union, and President Trump’s position on torture. He said he would defer to Defense Secretary Mattis on the issue of torture, even though he does not agree. Prime Minister May also announced that President Trump accepted an invitation for a state visit to the U.K.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer made a statement to reporters in the briefing room criticizing the media’s coverage of the previous day’s inauguration and estimates of the size of the crowds on the Mall. “This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration,” he said. He also commented on President Trump’s speech at the Central Intelligence Agency earlier that day. Mr. Spicer did not take any questions.

He defended his decision to commute the sentence of Chelsea Manning, who in 2013 received a 35-year jail sentence for passing hundreds of thousands of classified military documents to WikiLeaks. The president said due process had been served. He ended the briefing on an optimistic note, saying “I believe in the American people,” and a “good luck” to the press corps.
