Following a meeting with President Obama on Capitol Hill, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and other congressional Democratic leaders held a news conference on Republicans efforts to repeal and replace the health care law. Minority leader Schumer said the president emphasized the importance of preserving the Affordable Care Act, Medicare and Medicaid. In addition, he said Republican efforts would “make America sick again and lead to chaos instead of affordable care.”

Russian Hacking and Cybersecurity Top U.S. intelligence officials testified at a hearing on on cybersecurity threats, including Russia’s series of 2016 election-season cyberattacks. The witnesses agreed that Russia was behind the hacking and disseminating of fake news in the election. In response to question on President-elect Donald Trump’s criticism of U.S. intelligence agencies, National Intelligence Director James Clapper said, “There’s a difference between skepticism and disparagement.” Committee Chair John McCain

The discussion was moderated by CNN Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr and focused on President-elect Trump’s decision to nominate General James Mattis (Retired) to be his defense secretary and what challenges the two men would face from nations including Russia, North Korea, and China. This was the eighth panel of the fourth annual Reagan National Defense Forum, “Peace Through Strength: National Defense and the New Administration.” It was held in the Walter and Leonore Annenberg Presidential Learning Center at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California.
